Theme:

Has your approach been rolled out?

Not formal but interest and usage has made a difference via presentations and word of mouth.

Used Post-grads to disseminate across Universities.

Complex matrix approach – synergistic effect. Word of mouth, individual promotion. Students into national arena (conferences) and then Uni management taken notice.

Training / staff dev course online disseminates practice.

Barriers

Difficult to get some people to realise the benefits to them (vs time outlay).

Senior management engagement but almost a blocking at middle management level.

e-portfolio take up hindered by perception of PDP – not buying-in to process (as focus is discipline) so a minimalist use of PDP and e-portfolio. Some disciplines easier as part of the discipline approach.

Application to other disciplines

Reflection which is central to e-portfolio is appropriate to all disciplines.

Increase in demand from students.

Commonality of approaches.

Some universities have good cross-fertilisation by conference and CETLs

Is there a divide in approach between research–led and teaching-led university? Research-led = informal and network approaches seem to work best rather than top-down lead. Tend to be led by Learning Technologists. Some lecturers would be antagonistic to institutional-led initiative. Need different approaches for different audiences? Free food works well – lunch-time seminars.

Many unis have yearly L&T conferences to share and disseminate good practice.

Roll out strategies

Target middle management

Corporate developments often not led by those who are active practitioners

Students running sessions for students (induction and via Students Union)
